About Finca Lilapad

Finca Lilapad is a humble yet beautiful three acre sanctuary in the southwest of Costa Rica, established by Emily and Mateo Padilla for collective wellness and healing.

Based opposite Costa Rica’s tallest (600 foot) waterfall, we are blessed to have breathtaking views of this majestic vortex. The energy of the land we steward is mystical and heart-centered, with indigenous roots. Much love and intention has gone into creating and maintaining it.

We benefit from a comfortable year-round climate (between 70-85°F / 20-30°C), tropical flora and fauna, seasonal fresh creek water on three sides of our land, and a diverse ecosystem of jungle creatures. You’re likely to see colorful caterpillars and butterflies, furry agotes or even howlers and white-faced monkeys, and will wake up to a birdsong symphony of toucans and other rainforest birds and insects.

An organic, chemical-free farm practicing permaculture principles, at Finca Lilapad we grow medicinal and culinary herbs, nutrient-dense greens, fruits, root crops and ornamental flowers. Our goal is to become self sustainable, off-grid homesteaders, producing most of our food on our fertile land and eventually achieve food sovereignty and security for ourselves, our guests, our Valley Village members and neighbors.

The Diamante Valley is home to pristine rivers, stunning waterfalls, serene swimming pools, rock-elevated meditation perches, primary and secondary rainforest, intentional communities, conscious gatherings, events and farmer’s markets ~ many within walking distance or a short drive from Finca Lilapad.

We are also within a 10 minute drive to trailheads for two of the best waterfalls the country has to offer, Nauyaca and Diamante Falls. There is definitely no shortage of water and every shade of green you can imagine!

In tandem with the wider community, we are establishing and practicing a new way of life outside of the societal status quo, innerstanding the human conditioning and choosing an alternative lifestyle. We live harmoniously with nature ~ recycling, re-purposing and re-using where possible.

Whether you are visiting to grieve, unwind, detox, move or introspect, or to stay with us longer term as part of our new ‘Valley Village’ family community, we offer an immersive nature experience to help you reconnect deeper to Pachamama ~ our most freely available resource for remembrance and healing.

We have recently increased our accommodation capacity by building a cosy geodesic dome and wooden A-frame with kitchen, sunken crescent moon seating and bathroom. Our next project is to plant out the Hügel beds of our large greenhouse, built from sustainable materials leftover from the construction of Templo Ocho.

In addition to the off-grid rain water encatchment system, composting toilets and banana filtration circles that we currently use, further down the line we would like to install a back-up electricity supply. We hope it feels rewarding to know that your stay and contribution goes directly back into our land and community to consistently improve our offerings.

Retreats and ‘Valley Village’ projects here are led by our dedicated team and community, yet we as co-owners (Mateo & Emily) do not call ourselves healers. Rather, we have been blessed with wisdom and tools that we share from our hearts. Our dharma is to provide a supportive ground to assist with your own transformation and evolution, and to help you remember what you deep down already know.

Finca Lilapad is set between the city of San Isidro de El General (also known as Perez Zeledon) and the popular tourist beach and surf town of Dominical. It is a four hour drive from San Jose International Airport (SJO).

About Templo Ocho

Templo Ocho is a healing and wellness temple and the heart of our three acre Finca Lilapad sanctuary.

Since our beloved daughter Raiven Surya’s passing in 2022, our home has become a ‘Templo’ (‘temple’ in Spanish) with an altar space where we honor and pay reverence.

Designed with sacred geometry in mind, the ‘Ocho’ portion of our name was borne from an octagon having eight sides, with the number representing infinity, balance, transformation, connection, and the harmonization between matter and spirit.

Most of our offerings, classes and sessions take place in the spacious third floor Shala which is surrounded by 360 jungle, waterfall and peek-a-boo sunset ocean views.

The design also allows for combined indoor-outdoor living, featuring a terrace which has ample comfortable chill space including our ‘peace seat’, and adjacent to our master bedroom is a large mandala hammock measuring 3×2 meters where we are starting to host movie nights.

If you are interested in joining our new ‘Valley Village’ family community, much time will be spent together at Templo Ocho, in the yoga shala, large kitchen and outdoor terrace.

We also recently built more accommodation, known affectionately as our ‘pods’, to slightly increase our hosting and living capacity. A cosy geodesic dome and wooden A-frame are now available for dwelling and retreats.

OUR PODS

Our geodesic dome with double bed sleeps two friends or family members and our A-frame has two single beds also for either shared or single occupancy.

The two pods share use of an outdoor (covered) living space with a rustic kitchen that has a small fridge, sink and 2-burner stove, as well as a sunken crescent moon seating area and an outdoor bathroom with hot water and compost toilet.

The dome and A-frame are a 3-minute walk to Templo Ocho, where the main activities take place. Laundry service (washer and dryer) can also be provided.

As we are immersed in the jungle, if you have a phobia of bugs, we regretfully suggest we are maybe not the right fit for you!

OUR CABINA

Also used for our retreats and ‘Valley Village’ rentals is our cosy wooden cabina, set amongst our lower fruit orchard and more enclosed than our pods. Our cabina comes with a private bathroom and open double shower, and a well-stocked kitchen including an oven, fridge and laundry machine.

Shared use of all other Finca Lilapad facilities is included ~ yoga shala with waterfall view, communal gardens, large greenhouse, river, co-working space and fire pit.

About Emily Lilapad

Co-founder of Finca Lilapad, Emily has been called a grief retreat leader, yoga teacher, reiki master, coach, therapist, writer and designer. But the labels that most resonate with her are devoted wife to Mateo, proud angel mumma to Raiven Surya, and earthside mumma of Ignacio Sol.

Passionate about exploring and teaching modalities to help facilitate remembrance, healing and growth, Emily creates beautiful containers to inspire introspection, presence and movement.

Her medicine is nature, music, journaling, yoga and being vulnerable, all of which create deeper connections to pachamama, source, self and others.

Before moving to Costa Rica in 2019 and co-founding Finca Lilapad, Emily visited 50 countries, mostly backpacking, traveling Europe in a van and living in Dubai for five years. In her earlier life after graduating law, Emily spent 12 years in the corporate finance PR and communication world, before swapping high-heels for barefoot grounding and hair straighteners for matted locs!

Emily is a manifestor in human design, a pisces sun sign, a Myers Briggs INFJ and enneagram type 1.

About Mateo Padilla

A California native who garnered more than two decades’ experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry, Mateo is head chef and co-founder at Finca Lilapad.

Since moving to Costa Rica in 2019, Mateo has had his hands in the dirt and taught himself farming and permaculture. He is master designer of the finca and pulls philosophy from time spent in nature and embodying presence.

Spending most of his days working on the land, Mateo cultivates deep connections with his plant allies, but also loves to whip up tasty treats in the kitchen! During retreats, he cooks and gives tours and talks.

Passionate about travel, Mateo has been to more than 40 countries, lived in a van and worked in Dubai. He is husband to Emily Lilapad, proud angel daddy to Raiven Surya, furbaby father of four and earthside daddy to Ignacio Sol.

Mateo is a virgo sun sign and generator in human design.
